Night Dreams

by Spacewood on Feb.19, 2010, under Glasgow, Mixtape, Music, Nights Out

Night Dreams is a listening concept presented and curated by Dave Barbarossa (Fun Size, Curious Curious) and Hushpuppy (RPZ, Death Disco).

Both Dave Barbarossa and Hushpuppy are frequent players on the Glasgow club scene at various events – Huntley’s and Palmers, RPZ, Death Disco, Fun Size, Optimo and many others. However, both felt there was a distinct lack of opportunity in their sets to delve into the more interesting corners of their musical taste and present something that is a fraction out of the ordinary – if not totally off the planet – nor indeed was there anywhere where music fans and adventurous club-kids could travel to hear such sounds.

It was out of this realisation that NIGHT DREAMS was born. Night Dreams is designed to fill the gap that exists for a pre-club where a genuinely wild and varied collection of music can be heard that is interesting, stimulating and entertaining. Sounds that though might be danceable are not necessarily about playing straight forward club tracks and dance hits.

The proposed soundtrack at NIGHT DREAMS will include all things cosmic – rock, funk, synths, jazz, as well as punk, new wave, progressive electronics, psych, kraut rock, weird pop, foreign disco avant-garde and all manner of difficult listening. The ambiance will be complemented with soothing sci-fi video loops and calming fragrances (to sooth the rattle of the odd burst of jarring artifical sound).

The line up will be supplemented on the 13th March by the input of James Pole from the well know “Northern Lights” radio show on deepfrequency.com, who will be encouraged to come up with a set to challenge and delight the ears of the listener.

New Audio Player

by Spacewood on Feb.19, 2010, under Music, Shout Out

I’ve been experimenting with a new audio player, as the previous one wouldn’t always load correctly in some browsers. Enjoy this Animal Colelctive mix and let me know if there’s any bugs.

Bill Callahan + Four Tet

by Spacewood on Feb.18, 2010, under Music

On my lunch break, I went a stroll to Mono, in Kings Court, and swooped up a couple of albums. Bill Callahan‘s Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle and the new Four Tet album There Is Love In You. Both albums certainly deserve a place in any home. Bill Callahan’s smoky, deep and earthy voice is great to listen to and the lyrics are always simple and enjoyable. Songs about nature, out walking, country side, lost loves etc. I find this a welcome break from the materialistic/troubled/ common run of the mill lyrics that tend to sell records these days.

I’ve always liked Four Tet, but I was dissapointed with his previous album Everything Ecstatic. This seems less complicated, more accessible and I’m finding it way more enjoyable already. Bang it on when your making the tea, just woke up or after your pyerty. Good timezzz.

Chris D’eon

by Spacewood on Feb.17, 2010, under Beyond, Music

Chris D’eon can combine techno house beats with folkier, Middle Eastern acoustics. But don’t let that put you off-this ain’t no “Ibiza Chillouts 2001″. He lived in a monastery in northern India after college, where a Tibetan musician taught him to play the dranyen. The result is a really special and pleasant listening experience.

First track is a tranquil eargasm with lush vocals. I think the second sounds more of an Aphex Twin ambient work from the late 80s. Gie it a burl!

Beach Fossils

I’ve been listening to these guys for a few months and I can’t get enough of them. Unfortunatley I can only find five of their tracks and there doesn’t seem to be much mention of an EP any time soon which is a shame. I’m liking this sound, seems to be growing quickly out of Brooklyn. Have a listen, share your thoughts.

Chillwave

by Spacewood on Feb.01, 2010, under Beyond, Music

Morning. I thought I’d share a nice bit of music I found over the weekend. Don’t be put off by the artwork, this is nothing like Test Icicles. The sound is summery, warbled, organic, synthy, distorted, pleasant, ambient and simply great. This type of music is know as Chillwave or Glo-Fi. It originated in Seattle in Late 2008 and you can learn a little bit more here.

Perfect for a Monday morning when your working away, enjoy.

Bradford Cox Mix

by Spacewood on Jan.30, 2010, under Mixtape, Music

Deerhunter and Atlas Sound genius, Bradford Cox released another really nice mix (below). Perfect if you want some easy listening, folky unobtrusive music to work/chill to-more to download here. I was recently impressed to learn, that his lyrics are not pre wrote. He sings by stream of conciousness. I don’t know how accurate that is, however, as wikipedia can’t always be taken for word. If you haven’t heard his music before, check out these tracks under Atlas Sound and Deerhunter.
