Ian Guy for Dyson Award – Final 20

by Spacewood on Aug.28, 2010, under Glasgow, Product Design

Last month, we brought you news that, Glasgow School of Art graduate, Ian Guy had been nominated for his redesign of the intravenous valve system. Ian’s design is deservedly raising a few eyebrows and out of 500 candidates, made it through to the final 20 and is the only Scot. We urge you to take two minutes of your time to vote for him, and to help increase the chances of his invention going into production.

August Krogan-Roley

by Joe Crogan on Aug.27, 2010, under Glasgow, Painting

“My practice explores how spaces take on the stories of its inhabitants. I am interested in the idea that spaces act as digestive systems that deconstruct life and and absorb moments from the past.  In this sense, my paintings investigate how spaces take on a life of their own and become storytellers that hint at the people they once knew”

Massive Vitamins Party

by Spacewood on Aug.19, 2010, under Glasgow, Music, Nights Out

What impresses me most about Vitamins, is the way they are totally bucking the trend for club nights in the city. Time and time again, the same nights come and go, playing the same selection of music in the same selection of venues. Vitamins were tired of that, and decided that after all, is there really anything stopping them pushing the boundaries? They launched 2 months ago with their own interpretation of what a club night should be – a massive party utilising two stripped out west end tenements, crammed full with the dance hungry and a host of top drawer DJs playing well past the bed time. The result, a baptism of gold granting them an enviable, highly impressive first impression, and a list of people craving for more.

Round two, and Vitamins are raising the game once more. This time to a secret location in a beautiful forrest in the Scottish countryside. Tickets are exclusive and extremely limited and the ONLY WAY you can get your merciless mitts on this gold dust, is by emailing vitaminsuk@gmail.com and pray for a call back…

So what’ll be there? They’ve invited some of their favourite Glasgow DJs and VJs to tear the field up. Fortunately, this isn’t some crusty free party with the tunes buzzing out of a selection of guitar amps and speakers from Victor Morris – We’ve got Cheesy and Zambo (soundsystem of choice for Subcity, Big Foots, Sunday Circus and Thunder Disco) in tow with a big rig, plenty of lights and a videowall to match.

The lineup, in true Vitamins style is a multi-genred beast of DJ sets, one off collabs and live performances to last from arrival to departure. Who’s that you cry? This is who:

Bigfoots Tea Party // Point to C // Bones & Money // All Caps // HaHaHa (live) // Shaun fae Solar // Chungo Bungo // Dommm (pest control) // Tarantism // Troutfish // Simon Bryan // Marco // Cheesy & Zambo // Visual AIDS … & other friends

£25 a ticket and that also covers your transport there and back. 21st – 22nd August, bus leaving at 4pm. You may want to bring a tent and sleeping bag (if you’re thinking of sleeping). There are strictly only a handful left and if you need more information, check out their Facebook event page.

To whet your appetite, here’s a lil mix from Bones & Money for Vitamins. Seriously, what are you waiting on?

Recoat’s 3rd Birthday

by Spacewood on Aug.06, 2010, under Art, Glasgow, Graffiti, Shout Out

Friday passed, saw the celebration of Recoat Gallery’s 3rd Birthday. To mark this special occasion, artist’s from their recent Fool’s Gold tour headed up to paint and exhibit some pieces. One of the highlights of the show came from Insa‘s and Inkie‘s massive piece in the alleyway. The background was painted four times and a series of photo’s taken by WCNS’s Alex Martin, transformed it into an animated GIF. Check out more of these grafitti gifs over at Insa’s blog. TenTen from Hamburg and Veuch from Belgium also jetted in, dodged the neds and painted the other half of the alley with their unique style and really completed the piece.

To complete the event, Insa painted a Mercedes Benz and this was offered as a prize through the raffle. Congratulations to Nick Mangos, who scored the winning ticket – not bad for £1.50! Can’t wait to see it driving around Glasgow.

We would like to offer a big congratulations to Amy and Ali (above), owners of Recoat. We wish them twice as much success for the next three years as the past three have provided. Be sure to check out the Fool’s Gold video tour below, made possible by them and new Glasgow productions company Pigeon Promotions.

There are also more photos from the night, over at the fashion blog, Style Scanner.

Ben Cooper

by Spacewood on Jul.23, 2010, under Glasgow, Photography

Ben Cooper appears to have the nack to enter and document the untouched areas of Glasgow. These photos, taken from his High Places collection, show Glasgow in a way the public, practically never get to see. From the top, we have Glasgow Cathedral, Armadillo, Finnieston Crane, Post Office HQ, Inchgreen crane and John Brown crane.

If you enjoy urban exploration and abandonements, have a look through his massive collection of photos.
