Joseph Pielichaty is a creative explorer taking his first steps as a creative after graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in July 2010. Having studied Graphic Design, he notes that his passion for the subject’s diversity allowed for him to develop personal projects that questioned what can be labelled as art as well as design. He is shortly moving from his home in Nottingham to Glasgow, where he is working as a Graphic Designer as well as focusing on a collection of ongoing, personal projects.

“One of my more illustrative projects, The Stars Are Made of Ink is composed of honest, self-reflective statements and drawings found within the pages of my sketchbooks. Pieced together like a jigsaw, the finished print became like a doodled self-portrait that gives both everything away about my personal life and nothing away due to its cryptic, labyrinth-like aesthetic. ”

“My Blue Skies project takes the form of a small book, created during the long nights in Edinburgh when I would dream of escaping my responsibilities and fleeing the country. However, unable to make this a reality, I took to traveling via the pages of a newspaper, and cut out various segments of blue skies belonging to the countries I wished to visit. Within the space of few weeks, this regular, cathartic task meant that I had tallied up thousands of air miles without ever leaving my room.”

“My personal project 193/8 was a major piece in my final year of study and was based on a brief that asked me to develop a typographic shrine. It resulted in a series of experimental datagraphics, which were uniquely developed whilst traveling through the post to my address in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh. Giving a physical form to each of the items’ journey allowed for the development of a new, abstract form of mapping.”

I wanted to produce a calendar for 2010 that would encourage you to do something with the year, so I produced a less conventional calendar that acted as a countdown that faded as each page was torn off.

Edinburgh based graphic design agency Touch, set a brief to create a viral advert for them. I wanted to highlight that the company try to make the most out of paper, and also wanted to play on the idea of touch, by creating this stop motion animation.

20 year old Edinburgh College of Art student, Jamie Scott, moved from Peebles in the Scottish Borders to Edinburgh in 2007 to begin his foundation course, before specializing in Graphic Design the following year. He likes to work in a broad way, whether that be spending time in the print workshop or working digitally. For him the most important thing is having a concept that he can immerse himself in and have fun with; his most recent project being a personal one where he researched into the Chaos Theory and spent hours with a hole puncher. Jamie recently completed a work placement at Project in Edinburgh, and will be beginning his final year of studies later this month.

Emma is currently exhibiting her series ‘I started to laugh…’ in <a class=2postlink" target="blank" href="http://www.streetlevelphotoworks.org/">Street Level Gallery Glasgow as part of the group exhibition ‘Futureproof’ which showcases the work of emerging photographers from around Scotland.

Emma says “The images I have made for this series are nostalgic. I am photographing people that I want to hold on to, who are important to me and who I can’t be with all the time. The other elements I have photographed such as the still-lives, animals and landscapes are for me all ultimately related to one another.”

Joe Skilton grew up in the walled city of York, and left home in 2008 to study visual communication at the Edinburgh College of Art.Having recently jumped ship to the United States, Joe has been based in Baltimore, MD for the past 6 months.

Inspired by loving friends and bad tattoos, Joe captures certain moments with whatever camera he decides is todays special. At a rate of 3 broken cameras a month, Joe hasn’t spent more than $5 on a camera since 2009.

Moved by the talent and enthusiasm of his friends and contemporaries, Joe’s photographs attempt to seize what he is most fascinated by, the highs and the lows of the people around him.

Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF) is looking to recruit some film interns to help record the 2010 events.

They hope to interest anyone who has filming and editing background (and can supply their own camera equipment), who would be willing to create a series of digital “Art Bytes” (1 to 1 and a half minute films) in a quick turn-around time of a day or so during the festival.

These would then used by the EAF on its website and also to be available for key media for use on-line. Some of the excellent films that interns created last year can be found on their youtube site and these will give you an sense of what they are looking for.

There is sadly no fee available for the work, but they can cover all reasonable expenses, provide passes for all EAF events and there is a great amount of experience to be gained for future CVs, as well as the opportunity for the interns work to be featured by national news media.

The work period – with part time hours – would run through the festival between 29 July to 5 September with core dates 28 July – 7 August for the opening events. If you are interested in joining up, or know someone who might be, then do drop them a message at the address below.

It’s being held at Studio128 on Pitt St in Leith, Edinburgh tomorrow night (17th June).

Audio candy will be supplied by: electro pop outfit Futuristic Retro Champions; grungie Glasgow rockers Schnapps; popular local boys Jakil and Little Eskimos with their indie treats; plus Leith’s very own The Fusiliers.

All proceeds from the night go to the charity Fairbridge – who support young people aged 13–25 in the most deprived areas of Scotland to develop the confidence, motivation and skills they need to change their own lives. So if you’re about Edinburgh tomorrow, be sure to check it out. Good music and good causes.

“A proposal for the re-release of Booka Shade’s first ever three records. The covers were hand screen-printed black on black and the outer slip case stitched from cotton then embroidered with their existing logotype.” Illustrations by Matthew Swan

“I created a storytelling corner for adults and a publication to accompany this. The idea behind the project was to highlight the evident shift that childhood has made in past years: From being creative, making things and exploring, to now being over-powered by console gaming and the internet.”

“This was a self-initiated project. I wanted to explore type and craft using cheap materials over a space of time.”

Glasgow born, Jamie McIntyre, graduated with a First Class Honours in Graphic Design from Edinburgh College of Art. He is one of the founding members of the influential These Peöple collective. “I like to get away from the stereo-typical role of a Graphic Designer and his laptop when designing, and enjoy collaborating with others and exploring the possibilities of including a variety of working methods within my discipline of design.”

Jamie completed a summer internship at Snask in Stockholm last summer, developing a love for Scandinavian design as well as working in a small, alternative agency environment. Jamie has big ambitions for the future, where he hopes to set up his own agency and work in Berlin or Amsterdam.

You can see more of his folio at lila-love.com
