Image Of The Day

by Spacewood on Mar.04, 2010, under Art, Beyond, Image Of The Day

This piece is by Parisian artist Honet. I’ve been a fan of his work for the past 6 years. The clean lines, vector style artwork, simple choice of colours, gothic tales and melancholic characters have always captivated me. His photography from hidden Paris and urban exploration adventures are real eye openers too. Very rarely does he release work, but you can buy some of his t-shirts at the very excellent sixpack.fr store.

Was anyone fortunate enough to go to his exhibition, La Danse Macabre, in Glasgow back in 2002?

Kites Sail High

by Spacewood on Feb.24, 2010, under Beyond, Music

Think, a more energetic Boards of Canada with overtones of Bibio’s Fi album mixed up with break beats and submerged synthy loops. This is ticking a lot of boxes for me right now-music that doesn’t require a lot of attention, but still pleases when it’s on in the background. It’s the little known Kites Sail High.

There doesn’t seem to be a lot on him on the interent, all i can gather is he’s from San Francisco and remarkably, still unsigned.  Does any one know of any local bands similair to this? If so, share it in the comment box below.

You can download the EP, Alone, for free here.

Update

Kites Sail High got in contact with me, here’s what he had to say:

I’m just one 21 year old guy trying to enjoy life and share my music now. I’ve been doing Kites Sail High for about 3 years now…just collecting sounds I liked and assembling them but never releasing anything because I would tend to pick up a project than drop it and work on it months later so that’s why I’ve been doing that during the span of three years. So there’s things to look forward to in the future months! I’m not signed to a label but I was releasing Alone on tape via lifesblood.org They’re a cool DIY small label located in Irvine and have some cool bands on there.

Yaw+Ariel Pink+Cousin Cole+Schlachthofbronx

by Spacewood on Feb.22, 2010, under Beyond, Music

Ok, a bit of a musical stramash here, but guaranteed, they’re all good.

I had to share this Yaw track. Fantastic voice and music. Sounds like it’s 50 years old but it’s pretty new. Enjoy

When I first heard this Ariel Pink song, I thought it was some genius from the 80s. Turns out I was half right, he is a genius, but this is newer than you think. Definitely a highly creative musician, he writes and records all the music himself and has been known to make drum beats with his arm pits. He’s the type of guy you’d hope would be at your party.

Difficult to make this Bruce Springsteen song any better, but I think Cousin Cole has pulled this one off perfectly. This is taken from the Cousin Cole + Pocketknife album Tambourine Dream-well worth an investment. Other excellent remixes on that album include Devendra Banhart, Iron + Wine and John Lennon. Ace stuff!

Don’t really know too much about Schlachthofbronx, but I had a listen of this track when I was perusing the interweb and I can’t turn it off. Their stuff doesn’t really sound like this, but this JStack remix is yaldi boom time hombre.

Pogo

by Spacewood on Feb.21, 2010, under Beyond, Music

Pogo is a young chap from Perth, Australia. He has the impressive gift of being able to recycle films and give them a new lease of life through the medium of dam good music. He’ll sample vocals, bass notes, skits and anything else he can get his fingers on. I hope there’s a Goonies one in the pipeline.

Chris D’eon

by Spacewood on Feb.17, 2010, under Beyond, Music

Chris D’eon can combine techno house beats with folkier, Middle Eastern acoustics. But don’t let that put you off-this ain’t no “Ibiza Chillouts 2001″. He lived in a monastery in northern India after college, where a Tibetan musician taught him to play the dranyen. The result is a really special and pleasant listening experience.

First track is a tranquil eargasm with lush vocals. I think the second sounds more of an Aphex Twin ambient work from the late 80s. Gie it a burl!

Beach Fossils

by Spacewood on Feb.15, 2010, under Beyond, Music

I’ve been listening to these guys for a few months and I can’t get enough of them. Unfortunatley I can only find five of their tracks and there doesn’t seem to be much mention of an EP any time soon which is a shame. I’m liking this sound, seems to be growing quickly out of Brooklyn. Have a listen, share your thoughts.

Chillwave

by Spacewood on Feb.01, 2010, under Beyond, Music

Morning. I thought I’d share a nice bit of music I found over the weekend. Don’t be put off by the artwork, this is nothing like Test Icicles. The sound is summery, warbled, organic, synthy, distorted, pleasant, ambient and simply great. This type of music is know as Chillwave or Glo-Fi. It originated in Seattle in Late 2008 and you can learn a little bit more here.

Perfect for a Monday morning when your working away, enjoy.
