We Can Never Stop Mixtape 2

by Spacewood on Jun.30, 2010, under Glasgow, Mixtape, Music

The second instalment of, the exclusive WCNS mixes, is provided by one half of the RPZ outfit, Hushpuppy. His mix, Sunshine Pop Happening, has opted for an off-kilter, summer vibe using classics and rarities from the 1960s. He has also included a very interesting piece on his views of the movement, music and culture surround the 60s and our perception of it (see below the player).

I think it’s good to hear something different, especially when combining modern mixing techniques with music, totally not designed with that in mind. We hope you enjoy it and also be sure to check out the first in the series, Mathew Craig’s Synthia.

Edinburgh Art Festival Interns

by Spacewood on Jun.28, 2010, under Edinburgh, Jobs

Edinburgh Art Festival (EAF) is looking to recruit some film interns to help record the 2010 events.

They hope to interest anyone who has filming and editing background (and can supply their own camera equipment), who would be willing to create a series of digital “Art Bytes” (1 to 1 and a half minute films) in a quick turn-around time of a day or so during the festival.

These would then used by the EAF on its website and also to be available for key media for use on-line. Some of the excellent films that interns created last year can be found on their youtube site and these will give you an sense of what they are looking for.

There is sadly no fee available for the work, but they can cover all reasonable expenses, provide passes for all EAF events and there is a great amount of experience to be gained for future CVs, as well as the opportunity for the interns work to be featured by national news media.

The work period – with part time hours – would run through the festival between 29 July to 5 September with core dates 28 July – 7 August for the opening events. If you are interested in joining up, or know someone who might be, then do drop them a message at the address below.

Image Of The Day

by Spacewood on Jun.28, 2010, under Beyond, Image Of The Day

I’ve not been very good with keeping up with the Image Of The Day chapter. Apologies.

During this current Age of Attention, many find it difficult to have their imagination stretch to receive entertainment and enjoyment from birds and nature. Maybe that’s what Maurizio Bongiovanni is portraying here. The bird calling out and the stretch marks meeting us. Sorry mate, got Playstation.

Jude Browning

by Spacewood on Jun.28, 2010, under Art, Glasgow

Jude Browning’s work caught my eye during the GSA degree show. I’m a big fan of her collage work and the balance between white space, colour choice and shape. The organic appearance of her creations really lure your eye to explore further when you start notice juxtaposing objects such as planes, piers and abstract shots of, what appears to be, concrete architecture.

“My practice is concerned with the disruption of the “act of looking” and the appropriation of knowable themes and genres. This body of work scrutinizes an established concept of the exotic conveyed in the ubiquitous and tacky Tiki style and deliberately mimics a misguided and materialistic understanding of foreign culture. I am specifically interested in the crass subtext of clichés found in commercially rooted imagery. Through exaggerating a representation of cultural tropes and concepts of community I attempt to critique the techniques of (certain recognized) relational artists by drawing parallels between art of this kind and the appeal of experiential commodities. By creating a sense of over-abundance that blends together fragments of colour and form in an incoherent mish mash it becomes hard for the viewer to read the image as a whole.”

“I have recently graduated from painting and printmaking at the GSA and plan on staying and working in Glasgow for another year before going on to study an MA in art writing. My understanding of culture informed by my upbringing inspires my work. I spent my formative years flitting between countries such as Nigeria, Venezuela and Mexico and as a result have an understanding of what it is like to watch these cultures from an outsider and an insider perspective, as well as value the implications of a Western presence.”

Five Crusoes from Judith Browning on Vimeo.

Five different film versions of Robinson Crusoe layered on top of each other using Premiere Pro. The versions consist of a black and white TV series (1964), a version directed by Luis Buñuel (1954), a version starring Pierce Brosnan (1997), “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” (1964) and “Robinson Crusoe on Sin Island” a French porno (2005). The soundtrack is created using techniques that mimic the films construction.

RPZ bids Farewell to the Art School

by Hushpuppy on Jun.24, 2010, under Glasgow, Music, Nights Out

This very night, thursday 24th June, RPZ present their final night in the Vic Bar and bid farewell to the Art School for EVER.

It has been just over 8 years since RPZ (formerly Record Playerz until 2007) started their night in the Vic Bar in the Glasgow School Of Art. Since that time, the night has grown to be one of the largest and most successfully weekly club nights in Scotland. There have been a great many fantastic nights in that time, many firm friends have been met and been made over the years and the club has been, and continues to be, the blue-print for many many other nights that have come in its wake.

But really its not the end, it is just the end of RPZ’s residency in the legendary Vic Bar.   We’ll move on and change the dynamic and the destination, we love the music too much for it to be over.   But lets say a set of final thank yous and farewells, to those delirious times, those fantastic guests that we brought to glasgow almost always for the first time, and those f**ked up crazy dancing girls and boys who REALLY made our night the success it was.

Cum and danse in the Vic Bar under those neon projections and spinning lights one more time…

Lachlann Rattray

by Spacewood on Jun.23, 2010, under Art, Glasgow

Lachlann Rattray is an illustrator from Glasgow. He has a crude, psychedelic style which to me, resembles the dark archives of a humorous, yet bad trip in mind expansion.

“Basically I hate being bored, I think I am inspired by absurdity I also like getting a reaction. My style is pretty infantile and over the top i like my artwork to have a sense of humor and if it doesn’t make me laugh while I am making it then its probably not going to turn out well.”

“I have been exhibited in New York, Italy, Glasgow and Edinburgh and recently I was shortlisted for both the world animation and tv.sme.sk/ viewers award at this years Fest Anca animation festival in Slovakia; I was also asked to contribute to the most recent Beautiful/Decay underdogs book which was a lot of fun. I really enjoy being asked to participate in shows and exhibitions its nice to know that I am not the only person that A1 posters of star trek characters with bulbous eyes is a good thing.”

The Swiss at Death Disco

by Hushpuppy on Jun.21, 2010, under Gigs, Glasgow, International, Music, Nights Out

An especially disco-fied affair at Death Disco this month. The Arches was paired down to two rooms, with italomatic warm ups from myself and Josh Jones, a live performance from Australian trio The Swiss, while one half of current nu-disco darlings Aeroplane headlined with a formidible dj set.

The Swiss and their laconic but energised live show was however the highpoint of the night.   Tremendously satisfying and irresistibly danceable, The Swiss members executed a faultless, muscular hybrid of jazz, disco and late 70′s funk streaked with fantasic euro-diso synth stabs and more neon pow-pow-pows than Patrick Cowley’s entire back catalogue.  This might all sound like rather unpalatable Swiss cheese, but these guys come down heavy on the the right side ‘disco’ and with actual instruments (played with impressive skill).  It is a sound that harks back to classic era disco acts like Musique,  Kano and Cerrone, with a knowing and impressive nod to the inspirational jazz funk of late-era Passport and Herbie Hancock.

The Swiss

WCNS caught the guys back stage afterwards, interrupting a post-show critique of their own performance (despite a brilliant show they were being pretty hard on themselves) and grabbed this cheeky shot of the band before we knocked back a few iced beverages and talked fusion jazz albums and Doobie Brothers tracks.

I urge you to check out the current Ep Bubble Bath out on Modular and pump up the volume on the tracks nesting on their Soundcloud.

Jamie Shaw

by Spacewood on Jun.20, 2010, under Glasgow, Photography

Yorkshire boy, Jamie Shaw is currently living and studying in Glasgow. He doesn’t have a regimental format when it comes to photography, he carries his camera everywhere and what clicks in his mind, he captures.

There is a strong essence of escapism and fun in his photos. He does seem to have a knack for capturing the best moments at the best parties. It’s good to be able to immerse yourself in the fun and adventure which seems to be so present in his lifestyle.

Jamie has had work featured in Vice Magazine and also on Booooooom. Check out his Flickr collection We Are Adventurers.
