Secret Wars: Glasgow vs Bristol

by Spacewood on Apr.28, 2010, under Art, Glasgow, Graffiti

Tonight at Sub Club, Glasgow will be taking on Banksy’s home town of Bristol in their second leg of Secret Wars. Representing Glasgow is, Rekor, Conzo & Elph.

After Glasgow’s dissapointing 2-1 defeat to Malmo in the last round, be sure to head down to give as much support as you can. 16 European cities are partaking in this and tackling the might of Bristol, Inkie, Cheo and Andy Council. This should prove to be a fun and competitive night.

£4 in, £1.50 beers and Spectrum DJs are playing afterwards. Mm, Can you smell the ink vapours?

Be a Graphic Designer at Subcity Radio

by Spacewood on Apr.22, 2010, under Glasgow, Jobs

Subcity Radio are looking to have a number of roles to be filled. There are many positions available but in particular they are looking for a new Graphic Designer. Here’s what they had to say:

“Whilst we’re looking for all positions to be filled, we’re especially in want of graphic designer types who can make strong designs for events and the station in general, able to apply a fresh approach to a brand which has a fifteen year history within the city. Applicants don’t necessarily need to know how to proof for print etc, but need a good capability to design, and be enthusiastic about working as a key part of the subcity team. They also need to be based in glasgow to come to the weekly team meetings. Opportunities are good – events typically print 5-10,000 flyers of each design per event as well as runs of A2 posters. These are distributed and stuck up all over town and are key to forming the identity for one of the city’s most respected club promoters and music purveyors. Gives you a whole lot of experience in multiple fields, our design team also play an integral role VJing at our club nights etc.”

Have a look through their 15 year archive of designs for posters and flyers. It’s also worthwhile to look through the shots for their making of the 15 year birthday flyer, which is above.

Some fantastic opportunities and prospects can arise from this job. Here is what their current designer, Ian, had to say on his time at Subcity:

“Working as designer for Subcity has been tough at times – but highly rewarding and has opened up doors for me to explore other avenues in design. Being trained primarily in Product Design, I have been able to work on graphic design through working extensively with Adobe creative suite, as well as copywriting. One of the most exciting parts of the job has been the opportunity to put on live visual shows at subcity events with Glasgows highly respected VJ Visual AIDS and again learn new software. All of these skills have been highly transferable back into my product design activities and I have recently been offered a job working in packaging design/branding in Romania – something which I doubt would have happened without this experience.

The job is not easy, but it will offer you unparalleled experience in designing for clients – which is not offered in student projects at university.”

I can personally vouch for this as a great opportunity. I have been fortunate enough to work with the Subcity guys in the past and they are extremely professional, passionate and a level headed group. Down to earth, friendly and no egos – this is a great gig to land and if you enjoy design, go for it! The dead line is May 30th May 3rd and you can apply by sending an email to jobs@subcity.org.
